Instrumented Stand and Walk Plugin

ISAW was developed to provide clinicians with a very fast, but comprehensive test of balance and gait.  It measures 4 different systems underlying mobility: postural sway in stance, anticipatory postural control during step initiation, gait and turning. Subjects are asked to stand quietly for 30 seconds and then asked to walk at their comfortable speed for 7 meters, turn 180° and walk back to their staring place.  We automatically quantify over 90 metrics of mobility in this simple, quick test.

The ISAW plugin for Mobility Lab™ is the most comprehensive gait and balance test offered by APDM. It's like a force plate and video motion capture system bundled into one cost-effective and reliable system.  Set up and break down time take less than 5 minutes, while each test takes less than 1 minute, so 4-5 patients can be comfortably assessed per hour in any location.

ISAW Measurements

The ISAW test results in 46 measures of dynamic mobility, including: cadence, stride velocity, stride length, trunk rotation, turning duration and arm swing velocity, 7 measures of step initiation, including amplitude, leg ROM, and latency, and 38 measures of postural sway, including way area, velocity, frequency and jerkiness, totaling over 90 measurements of gait, turning, anticipatory postural control and posture in one simple test.

Measurement Protocol

The subject begins by standing comfortably behind the tape. After 30 sec of recording quiet stance, subjects are instructed to walk 7 meters, make a 180° turn behind the tape, and return back to where they started. Repeat protocol two more times. See video for an example.
