Instrumented Timed-Up and Go Plugin

ITUG, is an objective, fast, reliable and sensitive test of gait and postural transitions. It is a technological evolution of the standard TUG test, a familiar and well established test of balance and mobility.

Although the traditional TUG test includes several complex subcomponents, namely: sit-to-stand, gait, 180° turn and turn-to-sit; the only outcome is the total time to perform the task.By instrumenting it using APDM’s portable inertial sensors and analysis algorithms, we have improved the TUG test in several ways: automatic detection and separation of subcomponents, detailed analysis compiled in easy to read reports, and higher sensitivity than TUG.

ITUG Measurements

The ITUG test results in 5 primary measures of dynamic mobility, including: cadence, stride velocity, trunk rotation, turning duration and arm swing velocity, as well as 47 secondary measures, including: stride length, sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit trunk velocity, number of steps during turning and asymmetry of spatial and temporal measures during gait.

Measurement Protocol

The subject begins by sitting up strait in a chair with their hands on their thighs and their backs touching the back of the chair. After they are given the go signal by the tester, they rise from the chair, walk at their normal speed, turn around right after passing the tape at the end of the pathway, return back to the chair, turn around and sit down.  Repeat protocol two more times.
